Technology and Productivity

Do you feel more productive? The New York Times reports that the Information Work Productivity Council is sponsoring a forum in NYC to discuss the role of technology in the productivity gains of the last several years. Haven’t we heard all of this before?

“How information gets communicated and coordinated in a company can drive organization capital,” Mr. Radhakrishnan [co-author of a paper titled “The Measurement of Firm-Specific Organization Captial”] said, “so it is enhanced by information technology.”

And this:

The combined result [of social software], Mr. Brown [former director of the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center] said, is information technology that can amplify social interaction and enhance workers’ understanding of what is happening around them. The benefit, he added, could be to increase their ability to “collectively improvise and innovate.”

Yawn. Wake me up when we’re productive enough to cut back our work hours.

UPDATE: Techdirt has a less cranky take on this article.
