The Story of the Weeping Camel

Ah, a tranquil movie featuring easy-going, rural Mongolians, fuzzy little lambs, and baby camels. The perfect selection for womens’ night at the Philadelphia Film Festival. Except that one of the baby camels—a white calf with big, sad eyes—is rejected by its mother. Rejected? So far this week, my hair stylist ran away, boss-across-the-hall dismissed the idea of adding scrubs to the office dress code, and that guy on the internet never answered my letter. A rejected baby camel could be the straw that breaks the bad news. Especially if it dies.

Spoiler alert…

A musical ceremony reunites the calf with its mother, and all ends well. In addition to animals, The Story of the Weeping Camel features Mongolian shepherds and contrasts their lives with the residents of a nearby town (more like a few buildings and a yurt trailer park). I loved it; check out The New York Times review for a better description.

Thanks for the spoiler…I want to take my 8 year old to see this (the movie just came out in my part of CA), but she couldn’t take it if the camel died. We saw Winged Migration when that was out, and she HATED it because some of the birds died. Yelled at the theater when we would drive by. Cried during the film. Needless to say, I had to find out if the camel died. Thanks again.
