Reagan, Carter, peanut butter
Published by Becky S June 11th, 2004 in newsy, foodIt is the law that everyone must write about Ronald Reagan this week. Back in the first grade—right before the 1980 US presidential election—I was a big Reagan supporter. A sample of my astute political analysis:
Mom: Stop eating big spoonfuls of peanut butter—it’s expensive.
Me: Why?
Mom: Problems with the peanut crop.
Me: Oh. If Reagan is the president, Jimmy Carter can go back and help the peanut farmers.
And such was the birth of the vastly underappreciated peanut butter trickle-down economic theory.

thank you, i always loved my peanut butter and thanks to you…
Not only did Mr. Carter return to help the peanut farmers, but Mr. Reagan entered the White House to help the ketchup farmers (remember: it was a “vegetable” then). And, if memory serves, the government started handing out a lot of cheese shortly thereafter. What a great era for farmers!
And don’t forget about the Jelly Belly farmers. They also thrived during that era!
Becky you will be pleased to learn that more farmers went bankrupt under Ronald Reagan than any president in history. See how powerful your one deduction about agriculture was? By the way the cheese was really good.
