Mix of the week - silly iTunes edition
Published by Becky S July 16th, 2004 in artsAs promised, here is the punishment mix of the week:
- Beastie Boys – No Sleep Till Brooklyn
- LL Cool J – Mama Said Knock You Out (sorry Suzette)
- Britney Spears – Oops!…I Did It Again* Ha!
- Cameo – Word Up
- Dar Williams – As Cool As I Am
- Leonard Cohen – Dance Me to the End of Love
- Elvis Presley – Can’t Help Falling in Love
- Rosemary Clooney – Mambo Italiano
- Stevie Wonder – I Wish
The mix is here. I’m trying out FreeCache to see if the .mp3 streaming can be any faster. Thanks to Mike the Jay-Zeezer guy for the suggestion!
* Tintil, are you out there? I am bad with computers. What if I accidentally e-mailed a Britney Spears .mp3?

Yes, I’m here! It depends who you accidentally e-mail it to. If you send it to Britney’s lawyer or record company, you may be in trouble. But if it were to accidentally come to me, I wouldn’t tell a soul.
Damn - I’ve just realised my last message had a split infinitive. I guess I’ve just blown the chance of the mp3…….
Ahh the wonders of iTunes.
Isn’t Apple like the best computer company in the world, and stuff?
Dude…You’ve been Sampled…Great Site! And I don’t even have an Ipod, nor a desire to have Itunes. Have you read the articles about how Itunes strips the guts of the song to be able to fit it onto an Ipod? If not I will try to find it…Z
Loving the Brit Brit.
Found the link but its $2.95 (Yikes!) from the NYTimes archive.
I am pretty sure it’s the one I read it in…it compares about 3 or 4 different sites for downloading music…and it stated how Itunes in order to fit so many songs on Ipods, scrunches (techie term) the music to get ‘em to fit…Z

It is true that the music from the iTunes music store is highly compressed but they are encoded using not the mp3 codec but rather the AAC codec which offers high compression with higher fidelity.
All download services have to compress the audio tracks heavily, otherwise it would take too long to download.
I am listening to the mix right now. I always forget to listen, but I finally remembered! I have nevered listened to LLCoolJ and its not too bad. Well compared to the lousy rap I am subjected to everytime I visit the mailroom at work.
Secret admission: I like the oops I did it again as well
Ha! I knew there were other secret Oops! fans out there…
As for iTunes compressions and quality–I burn the iTunes onto a CD, and then turn the CD tracks into .mp3s for use in a non-iPod player. I’m sure that can’t be good for quality, but I’m not a real audiophile.
