yaaay

I was lucky enough to catch the Animation Show, a collection of short, animated films à la Spike and Mike, when it played in Philly last winter. And now it’s available on DVD! Uh, yeah, since May, so I’ve obviously been sleeping on the job. The trailer is great—check it out!

Three new pieces by Don Hertzfeldt are alone worth the price of admission. Welcome to the Show, Intermission in the Third Dimension, and The End of the Show feature those puffy and loveable “my anus is bleeding” yaaay creatures from Rejected.* The yaaay creatures discuss the meaning of animation, ponder the mysterious third dimension (”it’s like I can actually touch you!”), and tangle with some killer robots, but none of this is funny when you read about it—you’ve gotta get the DVD!

* Not all shorts in the theater run are included in the DVD. Rejected, a sick and hysterical Don Hertzfeldt production from 2000, is missing, but you can get it directly from Bitterfilms. Billy’s Balloon, another sick and hysterical Hertzfeldt/Bitterfilms creation, made the cut.

UPDATE: I really wanted to show one of the “yaaay creatures,” but the Bitterfilms website “asks that all images and artwork from this website remains only on this website. PLEASE do not copy, mirror, remote link, or otherwise make off with any content or images without permission.” So I took this picture of my t-shirt and put it up. Can I do that?

Hey, that looks like one of the Action News happy clouds!

Clair, the Action News happy clouds don’t have arms and legs!

FYI for the non-Philadelphian readers, this is a reference to an “old school” weather map used by the local ABC affiliate. It shows happy face or frowny face clouds, depending on the forcast. Someone once told me that they keep the old map as a tribute to Jim O’Brien, a former weatherman who died a hero back in 1983.
