Scary! Boo!

500

To celebrate the 500th post on Good Grief!, I’m going to blog less frequently. Or do more short posts. Or something like that. There are no plans to stop altogether—writing here is way too much fun—but it’s that busy time of the year. There’s tutoring to do and classes to take and books to read and friends to see. Not to mention that the music and theatre seasons are underway.

I’m taking a narrative nonfiction writing class*. I did something crazy and signed up for a workshop. Meaning that I’m supposed to show up with a story and other people in the class will read it and provide feedback. This scares me shitless for several reasons:

  • I haven’t written a story.
  • I’ve never written a story.
  • Real, live people!

To balance out the writing class, there’s a statistics class (offered free through my employer). Also scary. Finally, I’m tutoring two nights a week. Tutoring is the scariest scary thing because it involves another person. What if I can’t help this guy? Gad, what if I say the wrong thing and make him backslide?

So here’s to fall momentum. Good luck on your own scary stuff!

*The class is being taught by Meredith Broussard, who listed the following URL on her syllabus: www.failedrelationships.com.

I just posted my 885th post, and I have lots of other things going on as well.

    Let’s see… there’s work. And..

    Hmm.

Maybe I should take a class or something. Actually what I should be doing is studying the the GRE’s so I can get into the PhD program I want to get into.

Anywho, if your writing style on Good Grief is any indication, I don’t think you have too much to worry about at the class. I am a big fan of writing workshops in general, although I am not as big a fan of writing non-fiction.

    Am I rambling yet?

    Ok, comment over.

Oooh, oooh, I hope you blog about your writing class. It sounds way cool, especially since you have to do all the worrying and we readers just get the benefit vicariously, heh.

Anyways, as Scott says, you won’t have any problem. Why, there’s boss-across-the-hall, and …

I went to the failedrelationship website and read this story. I thought that it was great.

    Awww…thanks for the encouragement.

I’m sure I’ll have something to say about the writing class. I must say, however, that I’m shocked by the lack of demand for statistics blogging!

I like useless statistics blogging, like this: http://www.rawbrick.net/article/927/useless-statistics

Enjoy writing for your class, and congrats on the 500th post! (gosh, I’m only halfway to that milestone!)

I think that you should post all of your assignments here, I would love to read them.

Congratulations on 500 and good luck in the class. I am sure you will do fine.

Hi Bernard–there are no writing assignments. It’s a short non-credit class, and the assignments are all reading. Each session has time allocated for workshops, so you can get feedback if you’re in the middle of a project.

One reason I’m intimidated is the fact that I had no project coming in to the class. You should hear what some of the other people are working on.

If I like the way the story comes out, I might post it. It’s going to be about a confrontation I had with a cow back in ‘99. If no one likes the cow story, I might try to get into the next dictionary of failed relationships.

writing for an audience is by far the scariest thing in the world.
