Good news: SpongeBob Squarepants soundtrack
Published by Becky S October 24th, 2004 in arts, philadelphia
I’ll give you the good news first. Last week, Stereogum posted two mp3s from the soundtrack of the forthcoming SpongeBob Squarepants Movie. I’ve never seen SpongeBob Squarepants and had not heard of the movie, but these songs are charming (a complete track listing is here):
- The Shins – They’ll Discover Soon
- The Flaming Lips – SpongeBob and Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy
The movie is rated PG for "some mild crude humor," but the trailers are work safe. Other contributers to the soundtrack include Wilco, Avril Lavigne, Electrocute, Motorhead, and Plus Tech Squeezebox.
Remarked The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, "SpongeBob is the mutant offspring of The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine without the acid-hippie damage. Having spent most of my youth working at a fast-food fish joint, I can totally relate, without any irony, to the nobility of SpongeBob’s dream to someday be the restaurant manager."
Comments Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, "I fell in love with SpongeBob when I heard him describe the darkness at the bottom of the sea as ‘advanced darkness.’ Besides, how could I not write a song for the movie? It automatically makes me the coolest dad on the block."
I might have to see the SpongeBob flick, even though I’ve just barely recovered from the humiliation of seeing the Powerpuff Girls sans kid.
What was that bad news again? Oh, right—potential Philadelphia voting scandal involving the Russians and their delicious pierogies. More on that later.
Update: Information about the pierogie-induced Philadelphia voting scandal is here.

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
That’s how revolutions start, you know– feeding the masses on Election Day.
Uh, I guess that SpongeBob Squarepants lives in a pineapple under the sea? I’ll have to study up before the movie comes out.
Yoko–I’m all for feeding the masses, but not just a certain lucky subset of the masses.
Yes, yes he does. I love singing the theme song, but then again I am a little ‘off.’
SpongeBob rocks. Patrick sways. We love Patrick.
Redistricting for pierogies, perhaps?
Too bad I didn’t know you when the Powerpuff Girls movie came out– I would’ve definitely seen it with you. I don’t like Spongebob, though.
ugh. jeff tweedy being the coolest dad on the block? only if jay farrar says so, if you ask me.
