Mix of the Week: sharing and mashups
Published by Becky S November 3rd, 2004 in arts
To lighten the mood, a few tracks from the Wired Creative Commons CD and some fun mashups, my new favorite music genre.
- Ultra 396 – Beastie Boys versus Dandy Warhols: Intergalactic Friends [via Stereogum]
- Goddam Guest – Beastie Boys versus Beatles: Pass the Word [via said the gramophone]
- Philly’s own Jay-Zeezer – Jay-Z versus Nena [via Sterogum]
- The Kleptones – A Night at the Hip Hopera: Plan [via Stereogum]
- Zap Mama - Wadidyusay? [from The Wired CD]
- Spoon - Revenge! [from The Wired CD]
- Beastie Boys - Now Get Busy [from The Wired CD]
- McSleazy - The Hives versus Madonna: I Hate Music
- David Byrne - My Fair Lady Busy [from The Wired CD]
UPDATE: Uh, yeah, put in the link. You know, the one you have to click on to actually hear the music. As always, the mix of the week link is also under the “featuring” section of the right-hand sidebar.

This music is actually helping uncrank me. What’s the difference between a mashup and sampling? Can you mosh to mash?
I cannot explain the difference between a mashup and sampling. I think a mashup is supposed to combine tracks with the end result sounding like a single song and sampling ….
Eh, forget it. I have no idea what the hell these crazy kids are talking about. I like it, though.
Ahem! well…just fly me to the moon.
Just not my style. Nothing like Mx Raabe
You have a nice wit, Becky. Sitting around on a whaleboat as I am, with much time spent killing time, I appreciate it, and will drop anchor here again. Thanks.
Thanks, Gus! I am truly sorry to hear of your whale problems, but I’m glad that you have wireless access on the boat.
Moon Pappy, I think it’s great that you try out the mixes–sorry you didn’t like this one. You’re right about Max Raabe: he unites people of all ages and musical tastes. Max in 2008!
Maybe I should make a Moon Pappy mix?
My mood did not lighten with this mix. I didn’t particularly feel like dancing either. I am not sure what a Moon Pappy mix would contain, but I would like to check it out.
Yesterday was an exceptional day for me–I was in a dark mood that required the musical equivalent of electro schock therapy to revive me (which may or may not be related to electroclash music like that played by Ladytron). Becky provided that. Hearing heavy hip hop mashup was just the ticket to get me over the ticket–not something I’ll need to listen to for a long time to come.
Hmmm…Sam’s comment can be interpreted in several ways:
a) she is in a really bad mood
b) my mix sucks
c) both
Moon Pappy, Sam has thrown the gauntlet. Come up with your best mix, and I’ll post it.
I should’ve stopped with Max Raabe, as that post was obviously the pinnacle of my music blogging.
I disagree, Becky — the mix didn’t suck. I enjoyed it. I’m stuck at work editing technical documentation, and the 99 Luft Problems “mashup” actually made the task less horrifying.
I should say that Zap Mama on your list made me visit their site and listen to “Rafiki” several times. The mix doesn’t suck. It didn’t lighten the mood.
Thanks for the clarification, Sam. Though I’m sure it’s impossible to make a mix that everyone likes, so I wasn’t offended by the possibility of the mix sucking.
Editing technical documentation–now that sucks.
Still haven’t heard from Moon Pappy re: his mix. I suspect it will have some Willie Nelson and Norah Jones.
Yes this Moon Pappy’s mix would include Willie and Norah, but I must tell you about a new one woman show (plus piano accompaniest) who can play two harmonicas at once (two in one hand. I think she uses both her mouth and nose to provide the needed air movments. Her style is a little “boogie-woogie” (pun intended)
included is a pasted description from the local libraries web site (source of local high culture)
“Infusion With Octavia
Thursday, October 28, 7:00 p.m.
This musical band plays a tasteful blend of classic vocal jazz standards featuring selections from Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Fats Walker, Gershwin and more. Lead vocalist Octavia will delight you with her textured, smooth and sultry voice. Her harmonica playing adds extra spice.”
(impressed with the copy/pasting technique Becky?)
