Mix of the week: reasons to love the South
Published by Becky S November 24th, 2004 in arts
The South does not suck. I went to school below the Mason-Dixon line, and some of my band saxophone buddies from that era ended up in places like Mississippi and Alabama (the horror!) and are quite happy. And my cousin lives in Texas. Okay, he’s a vegetarian hippie yoga instructor in Austin, but that still counts, right?
The theme for this week’s mix: reasons to love the South. I know–I forgot Elvis.
- Loretta Lynn (KY) – Have Mercy
- Old 97’s (TX) – Timebomb
- Slobberone (TX) – That is All
- Asylum Street Spankers (TX) – My Favorite Record
- The Iguanas (LA) – Benny’s Cadillac
- Hank Penny (AL) – Hold the Phone
- Luncinda Williams (LA) – Car Wheels on a Gravel Road
- Johnny Cash (AR) – I Walk the Line
- Drive By Truckers (AL/SC) – The Buford Stick (The Legend of Sheriff Buford Pusser)
- R.L. Burnside (MS) – Rollin’ and Tumblin’
- The Mavericks (FL) – Dance the Night Away
- Ben Folds (NC) – Don’t Change Your Plans
Oops! Is there a hidden track from a special Louisiana guest? The mix of the week is here and can always be found in the "featuring" section of the right-hand sidebar.
Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!

The thing, I love about the southern states is the accents and of course the y’all.. and of course the warm weather
Hope your thanksgiving is grand
Lucinda Williams is one of my FAVORITES!
Don’t forget Gillian Welch’s “One Monkey”! It’s #1 on the Monkey Town Hit Parade!
Bye for now!
Musty
What is missing from your mix is all the great hip-hop from the ATL, including Outkast and Ludacris. Also, REM, who’s from Athens, Ga.
I just got back from a trip south, and I still don’t like it.
Of course, there are few things that I do like.
I am a difficult man.
I’m getting all weepy. What with all of this warm, yankee goodness pointin’ in this direction.
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.
Scott, weren’t you in DC? That doesn’t count as the South, silly man.
I can’t believe I forgot about REM. How embarrassing, especially when I see two Georgians in the comments. I’m not up on my hip-hop, so as for Outkast and Ludacris (are they individual people or groups?), I had no idea they’re from Georgia.
Gillian Welch. I know I should like her. I love all that “O Brother” Americana stuff. People keep lending me her records. I realize she’s very talented, but I just can’t get into it. I fell asleep during her show at the TLA last January.
I’ve also slept through Bob Dylan, Squirrel Nut Zippers (remember them?), Itzhak Perlman, more movies than I can count (most recently I Heart Huckabees), Kenneth Branaugh doing Hamlet (twice!), and the Philadelphia Orchestra. So Gillian, it’s really nothing personal. It’s not you–it’s me.
Except for you, Bob Dylan. Is it really necessary to sing “Like a Rolling Stone” for, like, twenty minutes? Jesus.
Good choices but how could you forget Southern Culture on the Skids and Camel Walk?
I knew this would happen–I’ll have to do another Southern mix.
Who’s in charge here? Where’s my Captain’s wafers?
and if you need elvis, I have several of him over here right now.
Well, I was in Manassas, VA. Is that the south?
I mean to ask.
How can you not know who Outkast is when you make fun of them in your Coffee Break links?
Well, I know that Outkast is the person/group responsible for Hey Ya, and that’s pretty much it.
I link to stuff I find funny or interesting, but I don’t necessarily know a lot about any of it. In fact, I do not support the Hey Ya boycott. I’m not tired of Hey Ya yet.
Doh!
A big fan of Outkast here. Hey, I’m a dork and I know it.
