Market Report: back from hiatus

Cucumber

The Market Report is a weekly column written by Ken Klein of Klein’s Supermarket in Philadelphia’s Fairmount neighborhood. He writes the column for the Art Museum Area News and kindly allows me to post it here.

The report is a fascinating look at the forces that drive the quality and price of our food; if you haven’t read it before, check it out!

Executive summary:

  • Clementines are at their peak.
  • Prices are down on peppers and zucchini.
  • Strawberries from Florida are looking good.

Read on for the entire report.

Greetings food lovers! An abbreviated post this week, as the Market Report comes back from hiatus (mine, not Ken’s).

  • Expect higher prices from the Western US regions, due to recent storms.
  • Green and red peppers are lower.
  • Green and yellow zucchini have come down in price as the heat in Florida increases
  • Cucumbers are the finest quality we’ve seen in months.
  • Strawberries from Florida have increased in volume this week—good quality and flavor with lower prices. No berries from California this week.
  • Clementines are at their peak. Enjoy them now; otherwise, you will have to wait another year!

Have a fruitful week!

Although it’s not on the market report, I bought some Cauliflower yesterday and it was cheap.
