Mix of the week: get your sadness and despair right here
Published by Becky S October 20th, 2005 in arts
It’s a special day here at Good Grief. Is it Halloween? The end of Ramadan? Viggo Mortensen’s birthday? No, no, and no. It’s time for the bi-quarterly mix of the week. I’m suffering from a case of post-road-trip-convention blues, so today’s theme is sadness and despair. Stream it here.
- Asylum Street Spankers – No Song Sad Enough
- Neko Case – Favorite
- Nina Simone – Without You
- Wilco – Say You Miss Me
- Coldplay – In My Place
- Old 97’s – Valentine
- Boy George – The Crying Game
And the number one sad song is so sad that it stands alone: Puff the Magic Dragon. It’s heartbreaking when Jackie Paper stops visiting Puff; the image of the fierce dragon ceasing his fearless roar and shedding his green scales like rain is so tragic—I always cry during that part. Shut your office door, grab a hanky, and listen for yourself.
PS Oh, and don’t even start with the whole “Puff is a code word for weed” thing. Urban myth.

Someone must have been listening to Puff the Magic Dragon.
Well–the overcast weather is not helping the blues. We missed you Becky! Don’t be sad. And I was totally going to write about little Jackie Paper has to mean roll your own before you fobid it.
Becky was gone?
I missed Becky, and I don’t even know her outside this handy internet portal. But I enjoy each new post, and share them with my friends.
Wow, thanks Indy Chuck!
Clair, I saw my mom today, and she said that your comments are getting extremely predictable.
I am only as good as the material I am given to work with.
Excellent…a return to classic Clair form. No doubt Mrs. Moon Pappy will approve.
