It’s an omelette!

And there are absolutely some broken eggs (and permalinks). Good Grief! has moved to a new home, and there is some residual weirdness like missing pictures and boring templates. Do not e-mail me about missing favicons and banner images, or I will ban you, and then you will be sorry. Sadly, I shut off several of the old feeds before announcing the new one, so probably no one is reading this anyway. But just in case, the new RSS feed for Good Grief is here: http://doesthisblogmakemybuttlookbig.com/feed/
Big thanks to Scott of Blankbaby fame for helping me find a host and introducing me to Wordpress. And now, business as usual.

Is this K2 I see before me?
February 5th, 2006 at 9:14 PM
wohoo! back in action!
February 6th, 2006 at 6:20 AM
Yes, hopefully back in action (except at home, where the old stuff appears to cached according to the mysteries of the Internet).
Scott, it is indeed K2, though I hope to spruce up the default style a bit.
February 6th, 2006 at 6:47 AM
Well–it’s very crisp and I’m sure there are all sorts of good reasons for the change. However–how will we know how to gauge your mood without the fab pictures and mouse revealing emotions? Is there a substitute?
February 6th, 2006 at 7:21 AM
Okay, Sassy, did you see the part about not asking question re: formatting? Must I ban you?
Believe me, it’s a small miracle that Good Grief! is still relatively intact after the move. Formatting stuff had to take a back seat but should slowly return as I find the time.
Look, you can make smiley faces in the comments!
:)
February 6th, 2006 at 7:21 AM
My last smiley face didn’t work!
:(
February 6th, 2006 at 7:41 AM
You give me hope for when I try this myself. Yay for the new home, and kudos to Scott as well.
February 6th, 2006 at 8:55 PM
OOh, love that image you’ve just put!!
February 7th, 2006 at 8:35 AM
This is fantastic! I have no idea why, but your old site used to lock up my browser the site loaded completely. It works nicely now, though.
Did you still need help with something to leech your old images?
February 7th, 2006 at 12:16 PM
Thanks, Luna and Dave. This is not the final format, but it’ll do for now. Dave, sorry to hear that the old site locked up your browser–I didn’t know that people were having problems (other than the normal Typepad stuff).
Thanks for the offer of help–the pictures were pain. I just used the Firefox downthemall extension to get my old pictures, so that should be okay. Any posts still missing pics are either old posts (I didn’t upload those images yet) or posts that still point to old stuff because they got through a “find and replace” loophole.
What I really need is a php and Wordpress expert who can also read my mind and know exactly what I want the site to look like. Any takers?
Yoko, it can be done, and it wasn’t too horrible. Losing the permalinks kinda sucked, though. According to Scott, all one needs to do is create a mySQL table that maps your old permalinks to their new counterparts and write a php script that runs whenever someone gets a 404 error. As I explained to Scott, my way is much faster.
February 7th, 2006 at 12:23 PM
Oh, and Dave…since you did such an excellent job of tagging your old lunabomber posts, are you for hire?
February 8th, 2006 at 5:40 AM
I can design your site if you like. Do I have to listen to your ideas?
February 8th, 2006 at 7:09 AM
You can also use some Apache mod magic to redirect stuff from the old URL’s to the new (assuming you are using Apache) though I’m not entirely sure how that works.
February 8th, 2006 at 10:32 AM
Congrats on the blog move. I think I may be doing the same thing soon, well after I buy a domain name. Anyway, it looks good, and I’ll be awaiting the bells and whistles. I must admit that I loved the mood indicator.
February 8th, 2006 at 4:20 PM
Melissa–you are either much more diplomatic or you too will be banned! Hmm–so know we can put our own mood indicators in?
I might need a tutorial on that–since I just tried to paste in a winking blue alien head and it didn’t work.
February 9th, 2006 at 2:48 PM
Wait, I specifically recall the ban threat being directed at emailing format suggestions! I read no such prohibition on leaving them in the comments…
February 9th, 2006 at 5:34 PM
Sheesh, you people are so literal! Perhaps I will have the Good Grief! lawyers draft up some new rules.
February 9th, 2006 at 8:51 PM
Welcome to your new home! I think it looks really nice! It took me a while (ok, 3 seconds) to figure out where the comments were but this aside, everything looks great!
February 10th, 2006 at 9:50 PM
From one Typepad user to one former Typepad user, why the switch? Was it because Wade Bloggs has somehow made TP uncool?
February 12th, 2006 at 11:02 PM
looks great, Becky — congrats on coming over the dark side.
February 16th, 2006 at 11:20 PM
Thanks, Estelle and Matt! Tom, the switch from Typepad is unrelated to Wade Bloggs. Typepad’s performace hasn’t been great over the past year; they keep saying the right things and promising an improvement, but it’s still not at an acceptable level, IMHO.
Using software like Wordpress will make it easier to switch hosts in the future, if need be. Also, I wanted to try something that I had more control over. One of the things I like about Wordpress is the same thing I like about Firefox–you can customize via extensions and plugins.
